Players can use the Sentinel Gate to travel the world, represented either by the battlefield or a tent. Encounters out on the field are often about fighting, but don't have to be!

Make a new encounter at the time of the conjunction, and tick “Include Conjunction” in the Conjunction tab. Any encounters to hook or follow-up on the plot need to be made separately.
You need to give a specific time, location, size and time limit and make sure the players are aware of it. If they don’t know exactly where they’re going, they can’t use the Sentinel Gate.
The refs at the gate will count the players through, but you’ll need to be there on time to lead them to the encounter, or ask another plot writer to do so for you.

For any off-Anvil encounter you must give as much detail in the “Accessibility” tab as you can. Players can ask refs about these things to determine whether an encounter is right for them, and potentially make requests. If you want a specific PC to attend you need to be prepared to accommodate the needs of the player.
Most of the boxes are set to “Radio the Plot Writer” by default, they should ideally all be set to something more specific. You should only need to be contacted by radio as a last resort.
It’s totally fine to leave something undetermined until you have a chance to get to site and see what condition the field is in, but try to sort this before time in.

Field encounters need to be arranged with Steve Kirkbride between events, over facebook or discord. It’s best to reach out as soon as possible, even if your idea is still quite bare bones.
The skirmish team has a Plot Team of up to 20 people. It makes all their lives much easier if they can use the same kit for multiple encounters. If you want to do something a bit weird (any faction the Empire isn’t currently at war with) it’s worth talking to other plot writers to see if you can work up a “package.”
There is a template for skirmish briefs on the plot wiki that’s well worth using. The skirmish team are great at sorting the right stats and kit so long as they know your Vision.

Tent encounters are arranged through a spreadsheet provided by the Plot Production team, ideally make your request as a comment or in a dedicated space for requests - don't edit the actual timetable unless asked to. Again it’s best to get these requests in as soon as possible.
The set dressing team often do a “big build,” like a wrecked ship or town market, and it’s great to work with that as much as possible. “Civilised” or “wild” spaces are relatively easy for them.
Tent encounters don’t have to be through the Sentinel Gate - players able to access the Hall of Worlds can pass through the portal to a “pocket” of any of the six realms. In this case there’s no need for the conjunction information, but do still fill in the Accessibility info.
For large creature costumes, like monsters and bespoke armour requests need to be emailed directly to info@mandalastudios.co.uk ideally 6 weeks before the event to ensure they are still safe to use and get them on site, 4 weeks at a minimum. Some do not belong to PD, and so have a cost to rent - coordinating with other writers so they see good use is encouraged.
The monster tent has boxes full of all kinds of props. If in doubt as to whether you’ll be able to find something, ask Paul Cope or the Empire Plot Production facebook group.
There is a moderate plot budget for sourcing new props. Every writer has an individual plot budget assigned to them (the exact amount varies, ask Jon Fry how much) and there is spare money set aside for bigger commissions. Send any receipts to graeme@profounddecisions.co.uk along with your bank details, and a note that the money should come out of the Plot Writer budget. It’s best to be specific. Not everyone doing make-up has a detailed knowledge of the system, so don't assume they know what a particular herald or monster looks like.
SFX
Straightfoward lighting & sound requests just need to go in Plotmatron field. This is best done as general mood suggestions, IC words are far less useful (for example “haunted tomb” or “busy city street”, rather than “winter realm” or “the centre of Sarvos”)
For anything more specific, contact Phil, Head of Plot Production. (Stuff like: lighting or sound changes during the encounter, pyrotechnics, any SFX in the skirmish woods)

More complex requests
The Plot Production team generally only take a detailed look at the requirements tab on the plotmatron two weeks before the event. It’s essential to get as much as possible in by that time so that they can plan their event out, but for encounter tents and more complex props, costume and makeup, you need to start a conversation much sooner:

Step 1: Find the right person, through a post in Plot Production

Step 2: Start with a short brief of the effect you want to achieve, both OC and IC. Try not to rely on in-game words like a specific eternal or foreign nation, and instead use colours, shapes or common cultural touchstones.
For example:
“OC I need a larp-safe sword with an elegant, glittery look. IC it’s an ancient blade forged from the stars”
“OC I would like a set where 6 players can sit comfortably and talk to an NPC, but with a creepy, decrepit atmosphere. IC it will be a meeting with an ancient ghost in a crumbling tomb”

Step 3: Flesh out the details together. They may have feedback on what is feasible, or suggestions for things that will help realise your vision

Step 4: At a certain point you should get a proper confirmation of what will be done, and a quote for costs if necessary. Plot Production will usually set this out for you, but you’re encouraged to chase for one if you need to move things along.

Step 5: Plot Production will get to work, and ask you any questions that may come up. For tent encounters be sure to still give a detailed description of what you want in the relevant plotmatron fields, otherwise it may not make it onto their schedule!

This is a logistics reference for anyone setting out to write plot at Empire. There's quite a lot to cover so it's been split up into several pages, as most plots will only touch on a few bits.

It is NOT a definitive guide - many systems behind-the-scenes at Empire are fluid and evolving. Trying to cover every detail would make certain parts eye-wateringly long. If in doubt, ask Jon Fry over facebook or discord.

Above all, know this: Approval from the game team doesn’t necessarily mean the idea is viable in terms of resources. It’s up to us plot writers to check in with the relevant team, and for the best results to do so as soon as possible. They won’t always be able to get exactly what you want, but can work with you for the best results within their limitations.

We usually set a deadline of two weeks before the event to get everything up on the plotmatron so other departments can take a look. If you miss that deadline your plot can probably still run, but other departments will be limited in what they can achieve.

Try to only request what you need, otherwise we risk undermining the game’s economy. A good rule of thumb is that an average NPC can have up to the seasonal output of a personal resource (9 crowns, 7 mana, etc.) Rich NPCs may have more, but you’ll need to get explicit approval from the game team.
You can also make New Ribbons and Potions (Artisan items and Apothecary potions) by selecting them from the drop-down menu.
These will all be put together in a plot pack at the event and brought up to the plot cabin.
NPCs are grateful to be given a crown or two if they’re going to be spending a while on the field, as an easy way to get a drink or snack, but these can be sourced from a box in the monster tent on the day.
If you forget to ask for a ref they ask that you get in touch once on site, before time in on Friday.
Any encounter with a likelihood of combat must request a ref (ie. players will be encouraged to start a fight, or meet hostile, armed NPCs.) It's also common to get a ref's help for casting rituals and delivering curses, but it's not a requirement. You may be able to log an effect yourself, or if someone wants to cast a ritual you're not prepared for it's okay to say you don't have the ability to process it. We usually have a tablet to share as a department, and you can access the system on any device through the onsite wifi.

It's especially useful to have a ref's help when there is a good chance of combat or complicated magical effects. Costume is sorted in monster by nation, and NPCs are generally able to sort it for themselves.
Dhiamara Coulson manages costume, and can be asked to make special stuff like particular heraldry. Give as much notice as possible!

Most foreign nation kit briefs are currently being reworked. Check in with Dhia as early as possible if you’re planning on sending out someone from any non-Imperial nation.

Props
The monster tent has boxes full of all kinds of props. If in doubt as to whether you’ll be able to find something, ask Paul Cope or the Empire Plot Production facebook group.

There is a moderate plot budget for sourcing new props. Every writer has an individual plot budget assigned to them (the exact amount varies, ask Jon Fry how much) and there is spare money set aside for bigger commissions. Send any receipts to graeme@profounddecisions.co.uk along with your bank details. Please try to get a VAT receipt if possible, it allows PD to claim some money back as a business expense.
Lineage, heralds, horrible gore, and more.

It’s entirely acceptable to have NPCs do these things, but try to give them a personality and agenda to bring to life.

Beth Charlton is the person to ask any NPC-specific questions, best contactable on facebook and in the “Empire NPC Crew” group.

The NPC team can cast and kit themselves in your absence, but it’s good practice to be around to answer questions. They should be ready for briefing an hour before the encounter goes out. Unless the role has a particularly time-consuming makeup job or brief, try not to start briefing any earlier or you risk leaving an NPC waiting around twiddling their thumbs.

If you need someone with a specific skill or availability (eg. happy to be covered in fake blood, or free at midnight on Saturday) you can look for people before the event in the Empire NPC Crew facebook group or discord channel. We try not to over-rely on pre-casting like this, as not every NPC is in these places, or able to do much prep before the event.

6-8pm on Friday, and 2-6pm on Saturday are often really busy times for NPC. These are often just the best times for plots to go out (too early and lots of people are on the battle, too late and people are starting to go to bed, etc) but be careful about asking for lots of roles during these times.

Items of historical significance, weird realm stuff, heretical auras, and so on. The system gives you most of the key info as you go, but most of it is collated here too.

If in doubt, run it by David Kibblewhite or Jon Fry, with a brief explanation of what you’re aiming to achieve.

Start at the Plotmatron Home > Ribbon > New Ribbon

Type
You’re likely to want either a:
*Unique Bonded Item - a unique item that gives a special power to the person who bonds to it
*Unique Activated Item - a unique item that produces a special effect once, and once only
*Non-magical item - a mundane item with a special aura, history, or ritual effect

Power
(Non-magical items skip this tab)

The wording of any special powers or effects will need approval from the game team.

Leave the expiry box alone unless you’re making something permanent, or doing something weird.

Creator
The name is necessary for the Hand of the Maker ritual. Each nation’s “The People” wiki page has a list of examples. The event field doesn’t matter too much, it’s only there for OC purposes.

IC Details
*Plot Wiki Link - useful for refs trying to figure out what’s up with an item
*Visible Details - what players will read on the ribbon. Good for a special name and RP effect.
*Hidden Power - extra effects for the player who bonds to it. Secret curses and the like.
*Hand of the Maker - a response for any players who cast a ritual. Not compulsory, but nice to do
*Skein of years - another ritual response. Both are good for giving extra context on an item
*Wisdom of the Balanced Blade - a diviniatory ritual for cursed items
*Spiritual Details - hallowing RP effects, and the effects of the insight skill. (Sometimes hallowings don’t stick when first made, I have no idea why, be sure to check!)

OOC Details
If you want multiple copies you can create up to 10 duplicates now, and each will be given a unique ID. Making multiple copies of one ribbon with the same ID causes problems!

If you need more than 10 copies of a ribbon you’ll need to repeat all of the above. Sorry.

Only tick the “Print Now” box if you’re making the ribbon in the field at an event.

If you make a mistake you can edit the ribbon after it’s made by pulling it up on the system (enter the ID under View Ribbon, or dig it out with Search Ribbons) and clicking Edit Ribbon.

For horrible physical and spiritual effects ask the Head Refs, Emma Woods and Rich Andrews, ideally well in advance of the event.

They’ll ask you to make the curse as a Unique Activated Item, and turn it into a laminated card you can hand to players.

You can see an example here

Money, mana, and more.

All the resources that make up the in-field economy are stacked in boxes in GOD. The best way to get them is by filling in the “Resources” tab with what you need. They will be delivered in a pack on Friday of the event.

NPCs are grateful to be given a crown or two if they’re going to be spending a while on the field, as an easy way to get a drink or snack.
If you forget to ask for a ref, or need one last minute, they ask that you radio for one no more than an hour before the encounter is due to go out.

For large creature costumes, like monsters and bespoke armour, the plot production team ideally 6 weeks to ensure they are still safe to use and get them on site, 4 at a minimum. Some do not belong to PD, and so have a cost to rent - coordinating with other writers so they see good use is encouraged.

Props
The monster tent has boxes full of all kinds of props. If in doubt as to whether you’ll be able to find something, ask Paul Cope or the Empire Plot Production facebook group. There’s the beginnings of an image database of props here.

There is a moderate plot budget for sourcing new props. Be sure to get approval from David Kibblewhite before spending any money! If approved you can then send the receipts to graeme@profounddecisions.co.uk along with your bank details. Please try to get a VAT receipt, it allows PD to claim some money back as a business expense, but some larp traders, and Amazon, don’t provide them.
There's a range of possibilities here, including smoke, lighting sound-effects and voice amplification, both out in the field and in encounter tents.
The NPC team have a range of abilities and preferences, but as a rule we try to avoid “postie” roles whose sole job is to hand over a prop or conjunction information.

If you need someone with a specific skill or availability (eg. happy to be covered in fake blood, or free at midnight on Saturday) you can look for people before the event in the Empire NPC Crew facebook group. We try not to over-rely on pre-casting like this, as not every NPC is on facebook.

6-8pm on Friday, and 2-6pm on Saturday have often been really busy times for NPC. These are often just the best times for plots to go out (too early and lots of people are on the battle, too late and lots of people are drunk, etc) but be careful about asking for lots of roles during these times.

Practically every plot will have an encounter on the plotmatron (potentially several.) In addition to making things run on time, it will help you set out everything you need in one place. Sometimes the database falls over so it’s wise to keep a backup.

Once you have the crew permission, go to the new “Crew” tab on the Empire website

Then click: Plot > New Encounter > and work your way through the tabs. The Accessibility tab is most used for encounters off-Anvil, but could be worth filling in anyway.

Once the encounter is made you can go to the Briefs tab to add information for the NPC team, as well as field NPCs like egregores, civil servants, and magistrates as relevant. Field NPCs get a print out of relevant briefs at the event and are generally very happy to help spread plot around.

If your plot has multiple encounters at the event these must be entered separately.
“Anvil Visit, Part 1,” “Anvil Visit, Part 2,” and so on.

Jonfry: /* Plot Team */

Overview
Plot is the biggest department in Empire, as it incorporates all our NPCs, our plot writers and runners as well as characters like the nation bards, egregores, civil servants and magistrates and back room operations crew who work in costume and make-up. We need lots of people to help us fill out all these roles, so if you're interested in getting involved in the IC side of Empire then we're keen to talk to you.

People sometimes assume that the plot crew is a good way for a brand new player to try Empire, but the truth is that everyone who works in the plot department is expected to have a good familiarity with the campaign setting. They need to know much more about the game than an average player and some basic experience with live roleplaying is usually valuable. Ultimately though the most important thing is enthusiasm so the plot crew welcome anyone who is keen to try out crewing.

Why Get Involved?
Being part of the right team on the plot crew can give you the opportunity to do the parts of LRP you like most. If you really enjoy fighting, then the skirmish team is perfect for you, if you like to play lots of different roles then the plot NPC team will suit you best. If you enjoy writing or running plot, making props or costume, or creating prosthetics of applying make-up then the plot crew includes specialized teams who do just that.

As one of the plot crew you'll be part of a great team that helps to create the event, but if you're playing an NPC then you also have a chance to roleplay and interact with the other characters in the game. Or as part of the back-room staff who run the monster tent and keep everything going you'll get a chance to be part of the plot being put together and sent out. If you enjoy creating plot, then writing for Empire gives you a chance to do work with some incredibly talented people and create plot on an epic scale.

Being part of the plot crew is pretty non-stop throughout the event. We'll try to give you a few hours off each event, so you can relax and socialize with friends, but it's not something you can easily combine with playing. It is hard work and you'll be challenged to constantly push yourself to try new things, but it's a fantastic team to be part of and a lot of fun.

Teams
There are many different teams in the plot crew, all of whom operate out of the monster tent - a massive tent full of people, costume and kit. It's a great environment to work in, there is always something going on as crew get briefed, dressed and made-up for their next part. At the end of the event all the plot crew come together to get the tent cleared quickly under guidance from the costume and props team.

Plot Team
The plot writers create the plot lines that help make Empire such an exciting game to play. Writers at Empire are encouraged to brief and run their own plot, though we are on hand to help at every stage. Running plot includes briefing and debriefing NPCs and helping to get encounters ready by liaising with costume and make-up. Some plot writers choose to play plot NPC roles or perform other responsibilities during the weekend when they are not briefing their plot.

Being an Empire plot writer is a great role if you enjoy creating plot and enjoy seeing players enjoy the game you have helped create. A little experience in writing is always useful, but is not essential. What is often more important is to have some experience playing a large fest LRP game, so that you understand and enjoy the kind of political game that we run. If you have ever wanted to create plot for a big game with over fifteen hundred players, this is your chance!

The plot writing team is run by Andy Rafferty. Andy has decades of plot writing experience, creating plot for fest systems like Maelstrom, Odyssey, and Empire. As the lead writer for the Empire setting he knows the campaign better than anyone and works closely with the writers to help them create plot that will bring that setting to life.

Guide for plot writers

Plot NPC Team
Our plot NPC team play the roles that have been created and written by the plot writers that happen on the field and in the Hall of Worlds. Members of the team portray minor Imperial NPCs, eternals and their heralds and representatives of other foreign powers. It is a great role for anyone who enjoys working with writers to create enjoyable plot for players.

The team is run by Beth Charlton who also handles all requests to join the plot crew, talking to people to make sure they know what is involved. Beth works with the NPCs to try and ensure that they get a chance to play the kind of roles that they enjoy.

Skirmish
Our skirmish team are the dedicated crew whose responsibility is to bring to life the battles, skirmishes and quests that the players choose to fight. There is a great team spirit amongst those who enjoy being part of what is effectively our monster faction. We aim to run all our fights using IC leadership and commands, so there are a range of roles for people. The team is run by Andy Connell and Thomas Hancocks.

The skirmish team is a great role for anyone who enjoys fighting and roleplaying a warrior or similar character on a battlefield.

Field NPC Team
We have a number of crew who play a single recurring role based in Anvil throughout the weekend. These roles are highly specialized with a clear focus on providing support and assistance to the game and the players. The Civil Servants support the main political structures of the Empire, providing logistical support to the players to run the Empire. The magistrates operate the Empire's legal system directing the player militia as they follow up crimes that have taken place. Our egregores are based in the nations themselves with a remit to support the feel of the nation and encourage the roleplaying in the camp, while the bards in the Three Refrains are more likely to wander the Imperial camps looking to bring music and aid to the people of the Empire. Finally out Academy team look after the interests of our younger players. The Head of the Field NPC team is Clare Evans

Plot Production
The costume and props team is essential to dress NPCs and get them ready for encounters. The team use their knowledge of the PD costume and props inventory to dress NPCs for roles they are about to play, including the player volunteers for the battles. They also help them to change after an encounter and ensure used kit is put away. At the end of the event they help oversee packing away the plot room away and separate any kit that needs cleaning or repairing. The costume and props team also work before the events helping to plan and arrange new kit creation and purchase in preparation for upcoming plots.

Being a member of the team requires some skill with costume and props, since you need to be able to use the existing inventory to create an effective look for a character. It's a good role for people who enjoy working with kit, managing the existing wardrobe and acquire new kit. This side of the event is run by Phil D'Souza who is head of Plot Production with Dhiamara Coulson running the costume at events and the props managed by Paul Cope.

The make-up team are essential for any roles that require make-up or prosthetics. These include orcs and characters with lineage, but they also include eternals and their heralds. The make-up team plan complex make-up arrangements in advance so that convincing effects can be created quickly in the field. They also help player volunteers don and remove make-up before and after battles. The make-up team work before the events helping to plan and arrange new make-up and prosthetic purchase in preparation for upcoming plots.

Anyone can help with make-up, since some make-up requires only a basic colour application. More complex make-up arrangements require some skill and experience. An air-brush is available for make-up crew who know how to use it. It's a good role for people who enjoy working with make-up or prosthetics and who want to help PD produce some fantastic creatures. The make-up team is run by Vicki Stephenson.

Time-off
Plot crew are generally busy throughout the event, so it is not a role that you can combine with playing the game. All crew are able to take a few hours off during the event, so you will have a chance to socialize with friends at the event.
