New page

Overview
<div float></div>
The sea to the east of the Empire does not have a known name; all accounts suggest the Druj simply refer to it as "the sea", and there has never been an Imperial presence on its shores. The sea stretches south, past Kabanja and Thronaskoni and past, beneath the cliffs of Skoura. To the north, it extends past the cliffs of the Vore. There are rumours of islands that lie off the coast, but these remain unfounded.

A project to map the eastern sea was spearheaded by Farsighted, herald of Rhianos, following the completion of the Great Race supported by the Regent of the Eternal Sea. A total of fifty-six fleet captains sailed beyond the Salt Flats following the Autumn Equinox 387YE. The information gleaned was made publicly available shortly after the Summer Solstice 388YE.

A note about the maps
The maps, and the details they provide, are insufficient to allow the use of ritual magic to scry on these territories. Furthermore, there is no suggestion that the features detailed are everything to be found in the territories in question - they are simply what could be observed from the sea with a reasonable margin of risk.

The Mists of Gloomsea
In the Gloomsea are immense monsters, hunted by the Hathjuk. Deeper, in the true mistwreathed seas, is a circle of tall, mithril pillars; each rising to more than twenty feet above the choppy waters. The pillars are joined at their very top by garlands of many-hued flowers, each bearing a cacophony of fruits and positively dripping in pollen. Below, within the circumference of the mithril pillars, the water is clear and serene. A placid centre of calm to the tempestuous chaos outside.

Clearly this is some form of magical structure; but whether it is more like a fane as typified by the civil service, something similar to the embassies of the Jotun, or something else entirely is beyond Imperial understanding at this time. The Hathjuk keep a close watch on the circle, and each ship is only able to spend a few short moments there before being forced away.
__TOC__
The Hathjuk provide the Buruk-Tepel with a wide range of esoteric reagents for their apothecarial arts. Either from the monsters they hunt in Gloomsea, or further into the eastern sea, which they prowl for victims. This region is made up mostly of islands; as such, it would require a navy to conquer Gloomsea. The presence of the circle of mithril pillars increases the total victory points necessary to claim the region by ten.

The Coast of Kabanja
Immediately south of the Salt Flats of Sanath, across the small bay from the flats of Leen Rarckan, the rolling hills of Kabanja fall into flat plains. In the distance, its highest walls visible even from the sea; is the citadel of Ipotavo.

Gates of Ipotavo
Built of concentric ringed walls, the highest point of the citadel reaches above the peak of the mountain and is topped with a beacon that is barely visible in the day and sends out three equidistant beams of dim radiance at night, one of which casts far across the dark waters of the eastern sea. A wall surrounds what was clearly once some kind of pass down from Upper Saarnath, but there has been a collapse, and it is clear even from the sea that that way is now impassable.

Closer to the coast, there are quarryworks visible that cut into the walls of the plateau of Upper Saarnath. Blocks of white stone are brought down from the quarries and lowered carefully down to waiting ships, which ferry the goods - surely white granite - down the coast to Thronaskoni.

The Cliffs of Thronaskoni
Thronaskoni is flatter and less hilly than Kabanja, and all along its northern coast there are small farmsteads and vineyards. The weather is pleasant here, though on some nights a chilly wind blows from the north-east. There are three citadels known to the Empire along the coast of Axos proper: the Chambers of Issyk, the Halls of Maykop, and the Towers of Kantor, and each in turn can be seen as one maps this rocky coast.

Chambers of Issyk
Issyk is the northernmost, and to the unfamiliar traveller it appears small: really just a handful of stone buildings built along the clifftops; it is as much a city as Trivento is. More experienced travellers, however, point out the currents which wind into the rocky cliffs to the entrance to Issyk proper: the citadel is built into natural caverns. There are docks, here, well-built ones with many piers: they are newly-built, perhaps in the last year or so, and are of recognisably Sarcophan construction. The docks are not overly busy with trade - times are a little hard here. The caverns apparently extend far back, many miles into the rock. What is visible from the sea are the iridescent natural lightstones which line the ceilings of the caverns, which rustle with the wings of thousands of moths who make their nest there. Above Issyk and to its south, there are more farms: the land here is clearly rich and fertile, and it feeds the city below and more besides.

Halls of Maykop
A little further along the coast, the rock darkens to a forbidding black: no natural colour; it is clearly part of some edifice, a statement of the mastery of the masters of death over the natural world. Here, a tiny port with only a few docks allows travellers to alight, and climb the winding stairs that cut a steep rise up the darkened cliffs. There, a traveller will find the Halls of Maykop, the premier institute of learning in Axos and the heartland of the necromantia. The buildings sprawl, bat-like, across the cliffs: above, squat towers lit with many lights gaze across the wine-dark seas. It is certain that the flotilla, mapping this coast, was observed by those who watch from the silent walls above. It is a black beetle atop windswept cliffs, and it keeps its secrets.

Towers of Kantor
Maykop's squatting form has hardly ended before the outer reaches of Kantor begin. This is what an Axou citadel looks like in storybooks - indeed, such books are presumably modelled off this very city. Much of the city is very visibly built out of white granite, in a maximalist style that screams wealth and power to all who gaze upon it. The buildings pile on top of each other, up to the sky: higher than perhaps any Imperial city, save for maybe Holberg - the walls of Holberg certainly outshine Kantor's, but its walls are at least as large as those of the Castle of Thorns. Almost every structure in the city is three or four storeys high, many much taller: it is clear that it must support a vast population, far outsize its area. Towers and bridges are linked by grand viaducts. Great aqueducts are visible even from the sea, which carry water into the heart of the city from hills to the south. These have a design not unlike the Skouran ruins in Mareave - they are free of the baroque stylings of Axou architecture, and have an efficient functionality to their design.

At night, the city is lit by an eerie, green glow. The lightstones here are not unlike those of Issyk, but where those seem to hold every colour, here there is only the sickly lime-green, which lights the sea mists and creates strange reflections in the waters. At sunset and sunrise, great leaden bells toll in towers and belfries across the city, and from the water it seems as though the business of the city holds its breath in contemplation, before carrying on. There are docks here too: greater than those of Issyk and clearly far more in demand from foreign traders. There are Sarcophan vessels here aplenty, but also other ships - a few Commonwealth vessels, a few bearing the purple sails of the Grendel, and others too: unfamiliar flags from distant shores. Someone from Kantor would say that Kantor is the gateway to the Sea of Steel - most others would say that is an overestimate, but it is true that there are sails here that do not reach the waters of Catazar.
