Long before The Empire and even Wintermark, the Dunnings have lived in and defended the southern region of what now is Hahnmark. With the Empire, peace and trade, the Hall of Dunhearth and surrounding town of Arnburh became an important stopping point for caravans moving the vast resource wealth of wood, charcoal, furs and metals out of Wintermark. Passing in came the bounty of the Marcher’s farmlands, grain, fruit and cattle but also goods from neighbouring Varushka and all the nations beyond. The family’s large military, the Redfeldr, provided security across this sparsely populated border area. As well as a martial legacy, the Dunnings are renowned for artifice, the abundance of materials being turned to fine woodwork, clothing, weapons, armour, pottery, glassware, jewellery, and famous ales and meads.
In YE 381 Arnburh, the Dunhearth Hall and neighbouring Woodhall fell into a sinkhole. Forewarned by the Navaar, the Thane and Redfeldr mobilised the town and cleared out all peoples and materials that could be moved. Hendal Hearth offered succour which was gladly accepted and a tent city was erected by this settlement.
In the summer gathering it was decided by the family that the virtuous path lay with building upon the legacy, to improve and turn disaster into opportunity. A grand Wintermark trading town was envisaged, that can re-establish the given flow of goods between Wintermark and the Marches, and any new trade routes around the hole. Likewise it could serve as a base of operations for mining into the hole and any further exploration of ruins below. At the heart of the new town is a large market where commodity trading could be conducted, the Dunning’s artisan goods sold and a new Dunhearth Hall with the various barracks, supporting buildings and defensible walls to ensure the continuing security of the area. This and the population of Arnburh rehoused in a new town to be called New Dunhall.
All this activity will ensure wealth continues to be generated in the region. These activities overseen by the Dunning’s chief administrator, the The Horderwýce of New Dunhall, a stewardship for the marketplace, border trade and nearby exploration of the sink hole.
