Overview
The Apothecary of the Story Garden is an Imperial title awarded to a citizen of Dawn. The announcement to build the Story Garden was made by Laughlan Vi Temeschwar, as Master of Rings, in Winter 387YE. The Apothecary of the Story Garden is responsible for providing potions to the virtuous citizens of Dawn in exchange for stories of their virtuous acts.
Responsibilities
The Apothecary of the Story Garden has a responsibility to provide potions to the virtuous citizens of Dawn in exchange for stories of their virtuous acts. In addition, if the Story Garden, or its attendants, were to be threatened in any way, it would be the responsibility of the Apothecary to deal with those threats.
Powers
Bounty of the Garden
The Apothecary of the Story Garden receives 21 drams of bladeroot each season from the cottage.
Appointment
The Apothecary of the Story Garden is appointed by unanimous decision of the senators of Dawn. If a unanimous decision cannot be reached, the title may be appointed by the Senate instead.
The title can be held by a citizen of Dawn. The Apothecary of the Story Garden has tenure and serves until they die, step down, or are revoked. They can be revoked by the General Assembly, the Dawnish National Assembly, and by the Assembly of the Nine.
Constitutional Note
- The appointment method of this title is unconstitutional, it does not follow a well-worn path
- The title can operate and be re-elected normally
- The title cannot be amended by the Imperial Senate without also addressing the issue of the unconstitutional appointment method
The appointment method of this title has been determined to be unconstitutional following a review carried out by the Constitutional Court. The title ought to be appointed by the members of the Imperial Apothecaries Guild. This status does not impact the use of any legal powers the position has and the title will be re-elected normally. However the title should not be used as an example of a well-worn path for a position with these responsibilities and it would not be possible to make any legal changes to the title (as the result of an opportunity or otherwise) without either addressing the issue of who appoints that title at the same time, or amending the responsibilities of the position so that it was clearly outside the remit of the sodality.
Recent Elections
The table to the right shows the citizens who have been elected to hold this title in the years since Empress Britta died.
The Story Garden
The Story Garden sits on the edge of Belletain in Sandling, Weirwater, by a clear freshwater stream that has been cleverly diverted over rocks and small waterfalls into pools before meandering through the flower beds to bring peacefulness and joy to those within. The gates of the walled garden are embossed with a variety of symbols and patterns befitting a location built to inspire. Two symbols take centre place, one on each gate. On the left gate is a Dawnish heraldry of an eagle in flight holding a threaded needle in its talons. On the right gate is the symbol of a Leaguish Free Company, The Crimson Reapers: a red rose with a green fern growing through a skull. The garden contains weirwood planters of herbs, which are carefully tended by a small but dedicated staff of local yeofolk.
A large cottage within the garden walls contains the apothecary workrooms. Small metal cauldrons hang above fireplaces, creating tinctures and infusions. Bunches of drying herbs hang on the walls between shelves holding bottles of many coloured liquids. Glass vials, distillery equipment, ointment bases, oils, and a variety of equipment scatter the spaces, ready to turn these precious herbs into powerful potions to be given to citizens of Dawn in return for stories of the potion’s use. Embroidered fabric maps hang in simple wooden frames on the walls of the few bedrooms, each one depicting a different nation. The Dawnish map is lovingly embroidered with sumptuous silk threads, rather than the linen or cottons which make up the others. It catches the light of the rising sun through the windows. The cottage also contains a writing room where the stories are collected and made ready for publication. Above the desk sits a portrait of Lady Nineve Orzel, who created and funded The Story Garden, and the symbol of the Apothecaries Guild to which she belongs.
