Mina i Yashum i Riqueza, Ambassador to Faraden

Overview

The Ambassador to Faraden is an Imperial title. It is an Imperial position appointed by the Senate. The Faraden embassy lies in Anduz, in western Segura, while the Imperial embassy to Faraden is incoporated into a suite of rooms and offices at the Palace of the Five Winds - the heart of Faraden government and culture.

Relations between the Empire and Faraden have always been a little tense, primarily due to disagreements around religion. In recent years, with the ascension of the pro-Imperial Tchinua Ganbatar as Liege of Five Winds, they have improved significantly. Faraden is a mercantile nation, which trades extensively with its larger neighbour to the east. Despite depressingly regular upsets - mostly related to the Faraden practice of Vengeance - this trade remains reasonably consistent. Recent years have seen additional tension as a result of Asavean attempts to interfere in Faraden, but for the moment the western nation seems more inclined towards the Empire than its many rivals.

Prior to the Winter Solstice 387YE, the Ambassador was able to purchase goods from merchants and those seeking favour. This was changed, along with the rest of the ambassadors, when the Senate voted to amend the embassies to end the practice, removing mercantile support and the upkeep costs at the same time.

Responsibilities

The ambassador is expected to represent the Empire in relations with the people of Faraden. They have all the responsibilities common to an Imperial ambassador. As such they are responsible for representing the Empire to Faraden, and to a degree vice versa. They are presented as the primary contact for any official Imperial business relating to the western nation, so their letters carry much greater weight and importance than anyone bar the Throne. They are expected to conduct or oversee any treaty negotiations with Faraden, and receive official delegations. The civil service will direct representatives and citizens of the foreign power to the ambassador wherever appropriate.

Ambassadorial Lore

Faraden Embassy

The Faraden embassy is found in Anduz, in Segura. Proposed before the Senate in Winter 378YE, it was completed shortly after the Summer Solstice 379YE. The founding of an official embassy was contingent on the liberation of Segura, and the repair of the Towers of Anduz. Without these two achievements, the Empire had no ability to protect trade routes (and avenues for diplomatic envoys) through Reinos. Ironically, barely three years after completion of the embassy (shortly before the Winter Solstice 382YE), Anduz was conquered by the Lasambrian Jotun. The embassy was in their hands until Anduz was retaken shortly before Spring Equinox two years later.

Providing an official residence for Faraden representatives, the structure is a fine example of Faraden architecture; sturdy, but beautiful, surrounded by a formally laid out garden mixing plants common to both the Empire and the western hills. In many ways, its design is similar to that of the Kabalai Palace, but on a grander scale.

The Imperial embassy to Faraden is part of the Palace of the Five Winds in Faraden, and is apparently quite luxurious. It is seen as a plum posting by many civil servants.

Faraden Ambassador

The Faraden ambassador to the Empire is Mistress Singua Karadragha. Mistress Singua advises the Court of the Five Winds on all diplomatic matters, and speaks on their behalf to foreign ambassadors. Her attitude to the Empire appears to be cool but professional, and heavily informed by the wishes of the Liege and their court, who seek more opportunities to trade with the Empire.

Ambassadorial Briefing

As discussed in the 388YE Autumn Equinox wind of fortune So little I wanted, so little I got, the civil service have recently reinstituted Ambassadorial briefings. At least in the short term, the civil service have resumed furnishing Imperial ambassadors who are supported by embassy staff with individual briefings where necessary and appropriate. To maintain transparency and preserve continuity, the briefings are made available to those who wish to review them after the summit where they are delivered, in a similar way to which historical research is made public. Only those elements of a briefing that are specifically personal to the ambassador may be removed, and only where they are clearly not of interest to the Empire. At the end of the year, this procedure will be reviewed again, to ensure that it is fit for purpose.
